CEP 810: Teaching for understanding with Technology
Summer 2011
instructor: susan way
In this course, I learned about the basics of using technology in education. It was overwhelming at first because there are countless technologies that can be used within the classroom. However, this course enabled me to get my feet wet by interacting with various technologies. I gained experience in using Google Docs and Presentations, RSS Readers, Social Bookmarking, Social Networks, Blogs, and Jing.

CEP 811: Adapting innovative technologies in education
Summer 2011
Instructor: Melissa White
This course was the first to take me outside of my technological comfort zone. Futhermore, I learned more about what different technologies could do and created a stand alone resource that I could actually use in my classroom! Before this course, I had no idea that I could create such a resource by merely using Power Point! I also learned a great deal about TPACK in this course, which changed the way that I planned and implemented my curriculum.

CEP 812: applying educational technology to issues of practice
Fall 2011
Instructor: Carolyn Mccarthy
In this course, I used technology to help solve a problem in my classroom regarding reading comprehension. Furthermore, I used video and digital storyboards that students wrote and acted out based on the stories that they have read to strengthen comprehension. I also completed a group leadership project focusing on the use of virtual pen pals, including the pros and cons of utilizing these in the classroom. This course enabled me to relate technology directly to my classroom and how I taught.

CEP 820: teaching k-12 students online
Spring 2012
Instructors: Michelle Schira Hagerman, Ammon Wilcken & april niemela
Until taking this course, I thought that online courses at the elementary level were impractical. However, my thinking evolved as I created an online course to introduce multiplication to my 2nd grade students. View my Developer's Notebook to read about my thoughts and ideas on my journey of online course creation.

CEP 800: psychology of learning in school & other settings
Summer 2012
Instructors: Leigh Wolf, Ammon Wilcken & danah Hendriksen
Throughout this course, I took a deeper look at how students learn and what they are thinking while learning. By using technology to videotape and record audio in the classroom, I was better able to assess my students' thinking and how I needed to adapt my teaching to best meet the needs of my students.

This course challenged me to look deeper at educational issues through research and analysis. Throughout the course I completed research through surveys, observations, and readings. For my research project, I studied the use of iPads in the classroom and whether or not they benefited student learning.

CEP 815: technology and leadership
Spring 2013
instructors: Luke Rapa & Josh Rosenberg
I learned a lot about what it means to be a leader and how to share what I have learned about technology as a leader. A big focus in this course was on using missional thinking rather than instrumental thinking. Furthermore, it's important to recognize your goals and what you want to accomplish instead of just assuming that technology is the answer.

I completed my teaching internship in Detroit, MI during the 2009-2010 school year while taking four graduate level courses through MSU. In the courses listed above, I focused on English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science curriculum. These graduate courses helped guide me through lesson and unit plans as I interned, preparing me for future planning. I also learned a lot about collaborating with coworkers. During the year, I learned a lot not only from my first grade students and my mentor teacher, but also from the four other interns that were in my building. Together, we even created a math lesson study that we all sat in on while one of us taught the lesson, reflected upon it together, then taught it again with a different set of students while implementing the changes that we agreed upon while reflecting. I am very grateful for the experience and would not be the teacher I am today without that year in Detroit where I was constantly challenged.
